Enacting Immigration Reform, Again
The authors of this piece were the chief instigators of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act that is commonly accused of granting amnesty to illegal aliens. Mazzoli and Simpson explain this piece of legislation by saying "[o]ur comprehensive bill was crafted to curtail illegal immigration, to provide personnel for labor-scarce markets and to give the most worthy of our illegal population a chance to earn legal status."
Although the authors admit that their bill has become highly unpopular in recent years, they also point out that more recent immigration legislation has been modeled after this same unpopular bill. With that fact in mind, the authors conclude that there must have been some truth and legitimacy to their original controversial legislation.
